An indescribable wash of excitement gripped the country when Tullow Oil Company announced that they had made a find on oil deposits in Turkana. The people in particular had something to be proud of. The place once thought to be hopeless now had the attention of the entire country. Then the excitement ended and in came worry, anxiety and uncertainty.

A number of writers have alluded to the fact that with the corruption rot that has almost become characteristic of Kenya, the oil find may be...

Does being a good handler of CDF make one good presidential material? Is it an MP’s job to handle CDF? Should we even be having CDF in the first place?

Here is the thing, CDF is a BAD idea. Why? MPs say they passed a law creating CDF because:

a. the central budget was always being embezzled.
b. some regions were being marginalised in favour of others.
c. the people at the grassroots should decide how to spend their taxes.

Are these sound reasons?

The government is mainly funded through...

The recent cancellation of the Limuru 2b meeting sent a somewhat chilling message to the nation. The rebirth of the dreaded Mungiki sect and the ascension to more prominence of Maina Njenga. This man, a self declared spiritual leader of his newly formed ‘church’, Hope Evangelical Ministry, will cause a big headache to the political class. He has a very large following from millions of hopeless disillusioned youth who would go to war just to advance his ambition. He has indicated a very...

My friend Dennis, who is not exactly a political enthusiast, asked me the other day if we can divorce politics from mainstream media and just have our local media focus on business and entertainment. That would have been the ideal scenario for him. My answer was that everything is driven by and has its legal foundation in politics; it is politics in mainstream Media that has led to the New York Times lasting 116 years.

More relevant to us in Kenya is the interrelationship between the media...

Are we all going to sit and watch grand corruption take centre stage in our country and mainly our politics? Most recently we have been hit by the NHIF scandal, our very own Salad oil Scandal that happened in the USA back in the sixties.

The Salad Oil scandal happened when banks for the Allied Crude Vegetable Oil Company granted it a substantial line of credit demanding its vegetable oil as collateral. Cargo ships carrying the company's salad oil were subject to inspection in order to ensure...

If they can do it, we can do it.

For those still not in the loop, France has a new CEO. Its official, after the presidential run-off, the new President Elect is Socialist Francois Hollande. This particular presidential run-off was nothing short of historic. For the first time in 17 years a United for Popular Movement candidate; in our case, Nicolas Sarkozy lost to a Socialist candidate-Francoise Hollande.

The Constitution of Kenya now provides that there shall be a presidential run-off to...

Power to SOME People

These are the words of a presidential hopeful before the 2007 elections.

‘The private sector must be promoted as the engine for more efficient wealth-creation, while ensuring equity in the distribution of the wealth generated by our efforts.

My government will concentrate on creating a favourable environment for the private sector to prosper.

Under a clear privatisation policy, government will quickly exit from profitable and well-managed companies and cede ownership to the Kenyan...

Neo-Oppression (2)

In my last article, Neo-Oppression(1), I wrote about how the old forms of subjugation have been replaced with more subtle but equally devastating forms of oppression. Today I would like to tackle specifically the issue of sexism as portrayed by the chauvinistic men in our society. Sexism is so prevalent in African culture (and male culture as a whole) that we had to put a clause that protects women in our new constitution.
